General information

Our breasts and rib-cage alter in size many times a day, and change during our monthly cycle. This is why you can be measured 2 days apart and get very different measurements. A measurement is only the start of finding the right bra for you. You are also likely to have different sized breasts (which is normal!) - some women have a more pronounced difference than others.

We all respond differently during our cycle, so the following can only be a guide. You will only know if it is right for you when you try on a particular style or size.

For specific information about bra sizing during pregnancy and breastfeeding, see our specialist site www.bras4mums.co.uk

How do I work out what I need?
1. What size have you been wearing? Is this generally comfortable? What style do you prefer? What shape does this give you?

2. What do you measure now? Get a friend or partner to measure you whilst you are wearing your current bra. You need a fully flexible tape measure. The first measurement should be taken in a straight line around your under-bust, around the line of your bra. Use this size as your band size - most modern bras have a lot of stretch in the fabric, so there is generally not a need to add anything to this base size. Check with our fitters if you want more advice

The second measurement is around the fullest part of your bust. Again, this should be in a straight line around your body. The difference between the band and bust size is your cup size.

3. Choosing a style. Choose one with room for movement – either up or down, depending on what stage you’re at. Most good styles, and all that we offer, offer a number of flexible features in the bra to allow for growth, or diminishing of you and your breasts. These include 3 or 4 hook places, adjustable straps and the fabric that is used. The product information goes into more detail about each supplier/product.

4. Are your breasts currently bigger or more tender due to your monthly cycle? Some women need different bras at different parts of their cycle - it's a good idea to have a soft cup bra for the few days coming up to your bleed as your breasts are more likely to be swollen and tender at this stage. An under wired bra can cause discomfort which we hope you can avoid!
